Overview
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a brilliant medical engineer on her first Shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The Shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone-tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness of space. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expance of space.

A Science Fiction Masterpiece

Once in a while there comes along a movie so different in its story, execution and delivery that it sets a tone for future movies of that genre. This is one of those movies. If you are into science fiction at all, you must see this movie.

This is by far the most realistic-feeling space science fiction movie I have ever seen. If you know anything about the space shuttle, you know how rudimentary it actually is. It is not automatic sliding doors ala Star Trek, it is 1977 technology in outer space, the most challenging environment humans have ever entered. This film lays bare how difficult it actually is in outer space with our current technology and how fucked everyone up there would be if something seriously went wrong. With nonstop intensity, it keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat. You won't know what happens next.

This is science fiction in the truest sense of the word. The excitement and intrigue comes from actual science. The situations they are dealing with seem 100% entirely plausible. And practically everything in the film seems to work from a scientific perspective. Go see this for an experience unlike any other. It is certainly up there among the best science fiction ever.

Excellent!

this movie is intense and the visual effects and digital audio are stunning. the 3-D is some of the best I have seen to date. this movie cleaned house at the Oscar's and for good reason. it is about a space mission that goes disastrously wrong, and it stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. absolutely stunning film!
